A quotation is never good evidence on its own — it is good evidence only for one specific claim, and the claim’s exact wording decides which one. Every wrong answer on this question type is genuinely from the right text, genuinely on the right subject, and often genuinely true, and still does not do the one job the claim asks of it. Points are lost here by matching subject matter instead of matching logic — a move that is fast, feels certain, and is precisely what the distractors are built to reward.

What the question is actually testing

A Command of Evidence (Textual) item gives you a short text — a description of a study, a summary of a scholar’s argument, a note on what happens in a novel or poem — and then a claim, a hypothesis, or a conclusion. The four choices are candidate evidence: quotations drawn from a literary work, or findings introduced with the words “if true.” Your job is to pick the one that does a specific logical job for that specific claim.

Two subtypes cover nearly everything. The literary illustration item describes a work and a claim about it, then offers four quotations: “Which quotation from the text most effectively illustrates the claim?” The empirical support-or-weaken item describes a study, a hypothesis, or a conclusion, then offers four findings: “Which finding, if true, would most strongly support the researcher’s hypothesis?” or “…most directly weaken the team’s conclusion?” The reading demand is different; the underlying move is identical.

How much of the test this is worth, stated honestly: College Board publishes the domain weight — Information and Ideas is about 26% of Reading and Writing, roughly thirteen of the section’s scored questions. It does not publish the split among that domain’s four skills. Any figure you see for “how many Command of Evidence questions are on the test” is a prep-industry estimate, not a College Board number. What is not in dispute is that this is one of the two largest question types in the domain, and that both of its subtypes appear on every form.

Foundations — start here if “claim” and “evidence” feel like the same word

Skip this block if the difference between a claim and a piece of evidence is already obvious to you; nothing later depends on having read it. If it is not obvious, this is the whole conceptual load of the skill and it takes four minutes.

A claim is a sentence that could be true or false. “The harbor is loud” is a claim. “The harbor” is not — it is a subject with nothing said about it. Every one of these questions hands you exactly one claim and asks you to work on it. Finding that sentence, and refusing to work on any other, is half the skill.

Evidence is a second sentence that changes how likely the first one is. That is the entire definition. Notice what follows: evidence is not a property a sentence has by itself. A sentence is not “strong evidence” the way a rope is strong. It is evidence for something, and change the something and the same sentence becomes worthless.

Take the claim “my neighbor’s dog is friendly.” To illustrate it: “it rolled onto its back for a stranger yesterday” — an instance of the claim happening. To support it: “three delivery drivers have petted it without incident” — a reason to believe it. To weaken it: “it has bitten two people this year” — a reason to doubt it. Now change the claim to “my neighbor’s dog is well trained,” and all three of those sentences immediately do less work, because friendly and trained are different claims. Nothing about the sentences changed. The claim did.

One reassurance and one warning. The reassurance: you are never required to know anything about the topic — archaeology, poetry, hydrology, whatever the text is about. Everything needed is in the passage. The warning follows directly from it: if a choice only connects to the claim once you supply a fact from your own head, that is a reliable signal it is not the credited answer.

The three jobs, and how the stem tells you which one

ILLUSTRATE — “most effectively illustrates the claim.” The quotation must be an instance of the thing, shown happening. This is where “show, don’t tell” becomes a scoring rule: if the claim says the quality is conveyed indirectly, or without the character acknowledging it, then a line in which someone announces the quality outright fails, however precisely it names it.

SUPPORT / STRENGTHEN — “would most strongly support.” The finding must raise the probability that the claim is true. The strongest support usually does this by closing off the most obvious competing explanation, not by adding another restatement of what is already known.

WEAKEN / UNDERMINE / CALL INTO QUESTION — “would most directly weaken.” The finding must lower the probability. The strongest weakener of a causal conclusion typically contradicts nothing at all: it supplies a competing cause, or shows the effect turning up where the cause is absent. A reader hunting for the choice that says “no, that did not happen” will usually not find one on the page.

Two pieces of stem language do real work and are easy to read past. “If true” grants the finding — assume it and evaluate the relation. “Most” (most effectively, most directly, most strongly) is a comparative instruction, and it is there because more than one choice will be genuinely relevant. When two survive, the credited one is the one that connects to the claim in a single step, with no extra assumption bolted on.

The method, in full

Step 1 — Locate the claim as a sentence. It is almost always the last thing before the question, and it usually announces itself: “concluded that,” “hypothesized that,” “argues that,” “in the text, X is presented as Y.” On a two-view text, there are two claims on the page and only one of them is yours.

Step 2 — Underline the load-bearing parts. The subject, what is asserted about it, and — the part people skip — the connective spine: *rather than*, *not merely*, *not because … but because*, *more X than Y*, *chiefly*, *primarily*, *only when*, *despite*, *without*. Every one of those words is a second requirement the credited choice has to satisfy, and every one of them is the basis for at least one distractor.

Step 3 — Write, in one sentence, what the credited choice must do. “It has to show him watching the motion while not calling the harbor beautiful.” “It has to give a reason the electricity drop would have happened without the trees.” Do this before reading the four choices. This is the single highest-yield habit in the lesson and it costs about eight seconds.

Step 4 — Test each choice against that sentence, not against the passage. The question is never “does this sound like it belongs here.” It is “given this, is the claim more likely / is this an instance of it?” Read every choice to its final clause; the disqualifying words are frequently the last six on the line.

Step 5 — Break ties by counting assumptions. If two choices both point the right way, ask how many unstated facts each requires to reach the claim. The credited answer needs none. This is also the check that catches the choice you liked before you read the claim carefully.

Mechanism

Why every wrong answer is on topic

Distractors on this question type are not invented from scratch — a choice that is visibly irrelevant is a wasted slot, because nobody selects it and the item’s difficulty collapses. They are built by taking the credited relation and deleting one component of it: keep the subject, drop the contrast; keep the topic, drop the causal link; keep the claim’s content, drop the requirement that it be shown rather than stated. The result is four choices that are all about the same thing, of which exactly one preserves the full relation. That construction is why fluency is actively dangerous here: the choice that most sounds like the passage is the one that was written to sound like the passage. Topic-matching is a fast, automatic process and relation-checking is a slow, deliberate one, so under time pressure an untrained reader will match topic and feel confident doing it — high confidence and a wrong answer produced by the same mechanism. Writing down what the credited choice must do, before the choices are visible, is the intervention that works, because it converts a four-way comparison into four independent yes/no checks against a fixed standard.

Worked examples

Fully worked — illustration, with a contrastive claim

  1. 01The item: “In the story, Amara treats her grandmother’s silence as something to be answered rather than filled. Which quotation from the story most effectively illustrates the claim?”
  2. 02Locate and decompose the claim. Subject: Amara’s response to the silence. Assertion: she answers it. Spine: *rather than* filled — so the response must not be chatter. Two requirements, both load-bearing.
  3. 03Write what the credited choice must do, before reading the four: “It has to show Amara replying to the silence with something that is not talk.”
  4. 04Test the candidates. (a) “Amara talked steadily through the meal, filling every pause.” — this is the rejected half, stated outright. (b) “Amara noticed the silence and found it unbearable.” — a reaction, not a reply; nothing is answered. (c) “When her grandmother said nothing, Amara set down her fork, folded her hands, and waited the same length of time before speaking.” — a deliberate reply, paid in the same currency. (d) “Her grandmother had been quiet since the funeral.” — establishes the silence exists; Amara is not in the sentence.
  5. 05Answer: (c). Check both requirements against the sentence written in step 3 — it shows an answer (a matched, deliberate response) and it shows the answer is not talk (she waits before speaking). Nothing has to be assumed to get from the quotation to the claim.

One step hidden — supporting a hypothesis

  1. 01The item: cave-dwelling fish in an isolated system have lost their eyes. A researcher hypothesizes that the loss was favored because eye tissue is metabolically expensive — not merely because eyes are useless in the dark. “Which finding, if true, would most strongly support the hypothesis?”
  2. 02Decompose. The hypothesis is causal *and* contrastive: cost, not neutral disuse. Both accounts predict eyeless cave fish, so any evidence that only predicts eyelessness discriminates nothing.
  3. 03Write what the credited choice must do: “It has to show that losing eyes bought the fish something — an advantage that disuse alone would not produce.”
  4. 04Test the candidates. “Cave fish in this system are blind” restates what is already known. “The cave pools receive no light” is background both accounts share. “Surface relatives spend a measurably larger share of their resting energy budget maintaining eye tissue, and grow more slowly than cave fish on the same restricted food supply” does the job. “Cave fish have a more acute sense of smell” describes a different adaptation and leaves the question of why eyes were lost open.

Two steps hidden — undermining a causal conclusion

  1. 01The item: a team reports that towns that installed streetlights along their main roads recorded 30% fewer nighttime collisions over the following two years than towns that did not, and concludes that the lighting caused the drop. “Which finding, if true, would most directly weaken the conclusion?”
  2. 02Decompose the conclusion. It is causal and it is specific: the lights, in those towns, over that window, produced that drop. Every one of those is a place to attack.
  3. 03Write what the credited choice must do: “It has to give a reason the drop would have happened without the lights, or break the link between the lighting and the drop.”

Solve alone

  1. 01The item: “In her essay on the poet Lenore Vance, the critic Adaeze Nwosu argues that Vance’s late poems refuse consolation — they name a loss and then decline to make anything of it. Which quotation from Vance’s late work would most effectively illustrate Nwosu’s claim?” (a) “The orchard died in March; by June I had planted pears, and the rows came back greener than before.” (b) “The orchard died in March. Named traps

Topic match, claim mismatch
The choice is unmistakably about the same subject as the claim and does nothing for the claim itself. The most common wrong answer on this question type, and the one that feels best while you are selecting it, because recognizing the subject is exactly the sensation of understanding. Test: state the choice and the claim as one sentence — “Because [choice], it is more likely that [claim]” — and listen for the point where it stops making sense.
Half-claim
The claim has two load-bearing parts and the choice satisfies one. Triggered by *rather than*, *not merely*, *not because … but because*, *more X than Y*, *only when*, *without*, *chiefly*. A quotation that lands the affirmed half while ignoring the rejected half is the standard build; a quotation that affirms the rejected half outright is the same trap with the sign flipped.
Circular restatement
The choice says the claim again in different words, or reports the observation the claim was invented to explain, instead of giving an instance of it or a reason to believe it. A claim cannot be evidence for itself, and neither can the data already sitting in the passage. On “support” items this distractor is often the one that most closely echoes the passage’s wording — which is why it gets picked.
Plausibility override
Eliminating a choice on a “which finding, if true” item because the finding seems unlikely. The stem has already granted it. This trap also runs in reverse: accepting a choice because it matches something you happen to know about the real world, on an item that is answerable from the text alone.
Wrong target
The choice supports or weakens something adjacent to the claim: a premise the question did not ask about, the study’s methods rather than its conclusion, the motive clause rather than the mechanism, or — on a two-view text — the other scholar’s position. Before committing, re-read whose claim is on the table and which sentence of it you were asked about.
Intensity mistaken for probative force
Choosing the most dramatic, most quotable, or most emotionally legible option. Vividness is a property of a sentence; evidentiary weight is a relation between a sentence and a claim, and the two are uncorrelated. On illustration items the credited quotation is very often the plainest one on the page.

The 800-level margin

At this level the content is not the obstacle. The claim is understood on first read and the obviously irrelevant choices fall away in seconds. What is left is a specific set of hard variants and a specific set of execution slips, and the distance from 1500 to 1600 on this skill is made almost entirely of those two lists.

Hard variant 1 — the comparative claim. “Chiefly,” “primarily,” “more X than Y,” “above all.” Evidence that establishes X is present does not establish that X outranks Y; the credited choice has to establish the ordering. The sharpest version puts a distractor on the page that demonstrates X vividly and a credited answer that shows X operating where Y was available and did not, which is what an ordering claim actually requires.

Hard variant 2 — belief versus fact. When the claim is about what a character believes, fears, suspects, or what a scholar argues, the credited quotation must exhibit the belief, not the fact. A line establishing that the thing is true does not establish that anyone thinks so, and a line establishing that it is false does not touch the belief either. Both of those appear as distractors on the same item routinely.

Hard variant 3 — the weakener that contradicts nothing. On causal conclusions, the credited answer typically leaves every stated fact standing and supplies a competing cause, or shows the effect appearing where the cause is absent, or reveals that the groups being compared differed beforehand in a way that independently produces the effect. That last one — a selection effect — is the strongest weakener available and the one most often passed over, because it never says the word “no.”

Hard variant 4 — the support that kills the confound. The mirror image, and the more valuable habit: before reading the choices on a support item, ask what a skeptic would say instead. The credited finding is usually the one that rules that alternative out. On two-view texts this is sharper still — evidence for a premise both sides concede discriminates nothing, no matter how directly it bears on the topic. Ask what the two positions predict *differently*, and look for the choice that lands on the difference.

Execution slips, named. (i) *Task-verb flip* — reading “undermine” as “support” on the second pass, most likely when the passage’s tone is sympathetic to the claim. Re-read the verb after choosing, not before. (ii) *Attribution slip* — evaluating against the wrong person’s claim on a text that contains two. (iii) *Qualifier drop* — reading “only in the first year” as “in the first year,” or “among adults” as “among everyone.” (iv) *Early commit* — selecting on the first clause of a choice whose disqualifying words are in the last six. (v) *Answering the right question about the wrong quantity* — on items where the passage reports several measures, checking the choice against the measure you remember rather than the one the claim names.

The one habit that catches most of these before they cost a point: after selecting, say the choice and the claim as a single sentence — “Because [choice], it is more likely that [claim]” — or, on illustration items, “[Choice] is an instance of [claim].” If the sentence needs an extra assumption to hold together, the choice is not the one. It takes five seconds and it is the closest thing this question type has to the sanity-check line at the bottom of a math solution.

Belief claims need a quotation showing the belief, not one settling the fact.
Final check: "Because [choice], it is more likely that [claim]." If it needs an extra assumption, it isn't the answer.

    This is selected by matching on “detailed knowledge,” which the quotation demonstrates beautifully. But the claim is not that she knows the land — it is that the knowing produces a particular feeling. Walking the fence line naming gates carries no discomfort at all; if anything it reads as ease. Half the claim, and the half that separates nothing.

  • B“The house had been painted a color she did not recognize, and she stood at the door a long while before she knocked.”

    The trespasser feeling is here — hesitating at a door that used to be hers is the image exactly. What produces it, though, is a thing she does not recognize. The claim specifies that her knowledge is the source of the discomfort, and this quotation makes her unfamiliarity the source, which is the opposite arrangement.

  • C“Her brother had run the farm for eleven years, and the ledgers, she saw, were kept in a hand she did not know.”

    This establishes the situation the claim sits inside — her brother’s tenure, her exclusion from the running of the place — and situation is not illustration. Neither of the claim’s two parts appears: no knowledge of hers is shown, and no feeling of hers is described.

  • “She knew, without being told, which of the three wells had gone dry, and she found she could not say so aloud; the knowing felt like something she had taken without asking.”

    Correct. Both parts land, and the causal link between them is stated inside the quotation. The knowledge is specific and unprompted (“without being told, which of the three wells”); the discomfort follows from the knowledge itself, not from anything else (“the knowing felt like something she had taken without asking”); and “could not say so aloud” is the trespass made visible in her behavior. Read the choice-plus-claim sentence and nothing has to be assumed.

Question 2Hard

Ceramic vessels recovered from a 3,000-year-old Baltic settlement carry a fine soot layer on their outer surfaces but almost none on their inner rims. Archaeologist Juno Halvorsen hypothesizes that the vessels were not used for cooking over open flame but for storing liquids, and were set near hearths only to keep their contents from freezing.

Which finding, if true, would most strongly support Halvorsen’s hypothesis?

  • AVessels of similar shape recovered from a neighboring settlement also carry soot on their outer surfaces.

    This extends the observation the hypothesis was written to explain rather than testing it. Outer soot with clean inner rims is already on the table; finding it again somewhere else is equally consistent with cooking over a flame that never reached the rim. Evidence that both explanations predict cannot favor either one.

  • Residue on the vessels’ inner walls consists of dairy lipids that break down at temperatures far below cooking heat, and the residue shows no sign of that breakdown.

    Correct, and it is the only choice that reaches both halves of the hypothesis. The residue being dairy lipids establishes that the vessels held liquids. The lipids being intact, when they would have broken down at temperatures well under cooking heat, establishes that the contents were never cooked — while remaining fully compatible with a vessel kept just warm enough near a hearth not to freeze. That is storage, near heat, without cooking: the hypothesis, item by item.

  • CWinters at the settlement regularly fell below freezing.

    This is the sharpest distractor on the item because it maps word-for-word onto the hypothesis’s closing clause. What it supports is the motive — that there would have been a reason to keep contents from freezing — not the claim that these vessels were used that way. A cooking pot in the same settlement faced the same winters.

  • DVessels recovered from inside the settlement’s hearth pits are cracked in patterns consistent with repeated direct heating.

    This runs the wrong direction. Repeated direct heating is what the hypothesis denies, so a finding that vessels at this settlement were repeatedly heated in fires makes the cooking account more likely, not less. Relevance is not the criterion — direction and target are.

Question 3Hardest on the test

In a two-year study of a coastal city, researchers found that residential blocks where the city planted street trees in 2019 used 18 percent less electricity in the summer of 2021 than blocks where no trees were planted. The researchers concluded that shade from the new trees reduced households’ air-conditioning demand.

Which finding, if true, would most strongly undermine the researchers’ conclusion?

  • The city selected the blocks that received trees from a list of blocks that had just completed a subsidized window-and-insulation retrofit.

    Correct. This is a selection effect, and it is the strongest weakener available because it explains the entire result without the trees doing anything: the treated blocks were already cheaper to cool before a single tree went in. Notice that it denies none of the reported facts — the trees were planted, the 18 percent gap is real — and still leaves the causal attribution unsupported, which is exactly what “undermine the conclusion” asks for. Check it against the claim-sentence test: “Because the tree blocks had just been insulated, it is less likely that shade caused the drop.” No assumption added.

  • BSome of the trees planted in 2019 did not survive their first winter and were replaced in 2020.

    The reasoning here is that if the trees were patchy, the shade story is shakier. It is a caveat about how cleanly the treatment was delivered, not an account of where the 18 percent came from. A weakener has to make the conclusion less likely to be true; this one only makes the study messier, and a messier study with an unexplained 18 percent gap still points where the researchers said.

  • CBlocks that received trees in 2019 also used more water in the summer of 2021 than blocks that did not.

    This is about the same blocks, in the same summer, and reports a real difference, which is why it reads as relevant. But water use bears on the cost of keeping the trees alive, not on whether their shade reduced cooling demand. The conclusion concerns electricity and shade, and neither appears in this finding.

  • DIn a different coastal city, blocks lined with mature street trees also use less electricity in summer than blocks without them.

    Read quickly, this looks like a challenge because it introduces mature trees rather than new ones. Read fully, it is a second correlation pointing the same way as the first — it supports the researchers rather than undermining them. On a weaken item, a choice that strengthens is not a near miss; it is the furthest choice on the page from the answer.

Question 4Hardest on the test

“The Cartographer’s Daughter” is a 2004 novel by Rasheed Okonjo. In the novel, Bem is convinced that his father’s survey maps contain deliberate errors, though the novel never confirms whether they do.

Which quotation from “The Cartographer’s Daughter” most effectively illustrates the claim?

  • A“The river on the 1961 sheet ran two miles east of where the river actually ran.”

    This is chosen by treating the errors as the subject of the claim. They are not — Bem’s conviction is. Worse, a flat narratorial statement that the map is wrong would settle in one line the very thing the claim says the novel never confirms, so this quotation contradicts the second half of the claim while illustrating neither half of the first.

  • B“Bem had never been good with maps; his sister had to show him how the contour lines worked.”

    Bem is in it and maps are in it, which is enough to feel like a match. Nothing in it bears on what Bem is convinced of, and being unskilled with maps is compatible with believing anything at all about them.

  • “Bem laid the sheets side by side and told his sister that their father had moved the river on purpose, though he could not say why a man would.”

    Correct. “On purpose” is the deliberateness the claim specifies, and it arrives as Bem’s assertion rather than the narrator’s, which keeps it a conviction. “Though he could not say why a man would” does the second half of the work: the novel presents the belief without underwriting it, leaving the errors unconfirmed exactly as the claim describes. Belief shown, fact withheld.

  • D“Their father had surveyed the delta for forty years, and no one had ever found an error in his work.”

    This one is genuinely tempting, because the claim does say the novel never confirms the errors, and this line pushes against their existence. But an illustration has to be an instance of the claim, and the claim’s subject is Bem’s conviction. A line that argues the maps are accurate says nothing about what Bem believes — and the credited quotation still has to show the believer, not adjudicate the belief.

Question 5Hardest on the test

Economic historians disagree about why the port of Kasimir declined after 1780. Talia Renn argues that the decline was driven chiefly by the silting of the harbor channel, which forced deep-hulled ships to unload at anchor. Piet Lundqvist counters that silting was a nuisance the port had managed for a century, and that the decline followed the opening of an inland canal that let goods bypass Kasimir entirely.

Which finding, if true, would most directly support Renn’s claim rather than Lundqvist’s?

“Ledger of Small Weather” is a 2011 poetry collection by Hana Sørensen. A critic has observed that in the collection’s title sequence, the speaker’s grief is conveyed entirely through attention to ordinary objects, never through direct statement of feeling.

Which quotation from the title sequence most effectively illustrates the critic’s claim?

    The most emotionally legible line of the four, and the simile makes it feel crafted rather than blunt. But “I have been sad” is a direct statement of feeling, and the claim says the sequence never uses one. A figure of speech wrapped around a declaration does not stop it being a declaration.

    Correct, and it satisfies the claim’s hard requirement — the one word “never” — which no other choice does. An ordinary object, described with the kind of precision that only sustained attention produces; “still” carries the time that has passed, and “turned so the chipped side faces the wall” records a care taken by someone no longer there. Every unit of grief in the line is inferred by the reader, and not one word of feeling is stated.

  • C“Grief is a kind of weather, and I have learned to dress for it.”

    Selected by reading “indirect” as “figurative.” They are not the same requirement. This line is metaphorical and it is also a direct statement about the speaker’s grief, named by its own noun in the first three words — and it contains no object attended to, which is the positive half of what the claim demands.

  • D“I counted the spoons twice and could not stop crying.”

    The strongest wrong answer on the item, because the first clause is exactly right: counting spoons twice is ordinary-object attention doing emotional work. Then the second clause states the feeling outright, and the claim’s “never through direct statement of feeling” disqualifies it. This is the standard half-claim build, with the disqualifying words in the last five on the line.
