Cross-Text Connections
Two texts, one topic — and what the second author would actually say to the first.

A cross-text item never asks what the second text says — it asks what the second text commits its author to. Two writers on one topic overlap almost completely in subject and almost never in position, and all four choices are built out of that overlap. Three of them are things the second author might well believe and never actually wrote down; exactly one is underwritten by their own sentences.

Two or three questions on exactly what this lesson teaches. Being wrong here is fine — it's the fastest way to find out what to pay attention to next.
Before any teaching. A question asks how the author of Text 2 would most likely respond to a claim made in Text 1. Which constraint must the credited answer satisfy?
Text 1 reports that patients' symptoms improved during a trial of a new drug and concludes that the drug works. Text 2 says, in full: "The improvement is real. But the trial had no placebo group, and patients who expect relief reliably report it." What is Text 2 doing to Text 1?
A question asks what both authors would most likely agree about. Text 1 argues that a city's sharp drop in burglaries was caused by expanded street lighting. Text 2 argues the drop was caused by a simultaneous change in police deployment, and never mentions lighting at all. Which statement can be credited as shared?
What the question is actually testing
A cross-text item gives you two short passages, labelled Text 1 and Text 2, on a single subject — typically 50 to 80 words each — followed by one question and four choices. The stems recur in a small set of shapes: how would the author of Text 2 most likely respond to the claim in Text 1; how would the author of Text 2 most likely characterise a specific thing Text 1 describes; what would both authors most likely agree about; which choice best describes the relationship between the two texts.
The comprehension load is low. Neither passage is difficult on its own, and you will rarely finish reading a cross-text pair unsure what either text said. The difficulty is entirely in the transfer step: turning two understood arguments into one precise statement about how the second bears on the first, and then holding that statement steady against four choices engineered to be almost it.
On frequency, be exact about what is known. College Board publishes the domain weight — Craft & Structure is about 28% of Reading & Writing — but does not publish a per-skill question count. In released Bluebook forms a cross-text pair turns up roughly once per module, so call it about two questions on a full test. That count is an observation off released forms, prep-industry rather than official, and worth holding loosely.
The claim that this is the hardest Reading & Writing item is also not a College Board statement; there is no official difficulty ranking by skill. What is structural and not a matter of opinion: this is the only Reading & Writing item that requires you to hold two complete arguments in mind simultaneously and reason about the relation between them. Every other item asks about one text.
Foundations — claim, not topic (skip if this is already automatic)
If you can already state any short argument's claim in one sentence, and reliably tell that claim apart from the evidence offered for it, skip this block — the method picks up two blocks down. If that distinction has never been made explicit for you, this is the part that makes everything after it work, and it is worth ten unhurried minutes.
A topic is what a text is about. A claim is what a text asserts about that topic — a full sentence, with a position in it, that a reasonable person could disagree with. "Martian gullies" is a topic. "Martian gullies were carved by liquid brine" is a claim. Four answer choices on a cross-text item will all be about the topic. Only one will be about the claim, which is why sorting by topic gets you nowhere and sorting by claim gets you the answer.
The test for whether you have a claim rather than a topic: could someone contradict it? "The text discusses the printing press and the Reformation" cannot be contradicted — it is a description of the text, not of the world. "The printing press caused the Reformation to spread" can be, and in fact Text 2 usually does. If your one-sentence summary cannot be argued with, you have summarised the subject and not the position, and you are not yet ready to look at the choices.
Force a verb of position into your sentence. Write "Text 1 argues that…", "concludes that…", "attributes X to Y", "denies that…", "doubts whether…". Those verbs are load-bearing: they carry the strength of the claim as well as its content, and strength is what separates the credited answer from the runner-up on the hardest pairs. "Text 1 says something about breakfast" is useless. "Text 1 concludes that eating breakfast causes lower body weight" is a working tool.
Second distinction, equally basic and equally worth spelling out: what a text observed versus what it concluded from the observation. "Fish numbers tripled after the dam came out" is an observation. "Removing the dam restored the fish population" is a conclusion drawn from it. Nearly every hard cross-text item lives in the gap between those two sentences, because the standard move for Text 2 is to accept the observation and refuse the conclusion. If your summary of Text 1 does not separate them, you cannot see where Text 2 is aiming.
The passages hand you the position words if you look for them. "Reyes concluded that…", "on this account…", "the conventional explanation is…", "in her view…", "the argument runs…", "critics have often read…" — each of these announces that a position is arriving and that what follows is contestable. Underline the sentence that comes after one of those phrases and you have almost always found the claim.
The six relationships, and the language that gives each away
Once both claims are stated, the relationship between them is not open-ended. Six shapes cover nearly everything the Digital SAT builds. Naming the shape is the move that makes the choices sortable, because each wrong choice is a named shape with one dimension bent.
CONTRADICTION — Text 2 says the claim is false. Giveaway: a direct counter-fact, a study that found nothing, "in fact," "no such," "the opposite." This is the shape students expect and the shape that appears least often on hard pairs.
ALTERNATIVE EXPLANATION — Text 2 accepts what Text 1 observed and rejects why Text 1 says it happened. Giveaway: the observation is granted in one clause and a rival cause introduced in the next — "what it did was," "may be genuine, but," "another possibility." This is the most common shape on hard pairs, and it is the one most often mistaken for contradiction.
SCOPE LIMITATION — the claim holds, but in a narrower range of cases than Text 1 implies. Giveaway: a subset that carries the whole effect, "only when," "in these cases," "supports a narrower claim than."
INSUFFICIENT EVIDENCE — Text 2 does not say the claim is wrong; it says nothing yet shows it is right. Giveaway: "does not establish," "cannot discriminate between," "until X is shown," "remains one candidate among several." The credited answer for this shape is always weaker than students want it to be.
SUPPORT OR EXTENSION — Text 2 supplies a mechanism, an independent case, or corroborating evidence for Text 1, contesting nothing. Giveaway: Text 2 explains why Text 1's observation would be expected to occur. Under-selected, because a pair that does not argue feels like a trick.
REFRAMING — Text 2 says the question itself is mis-posed, or the category Text 1 is using does not carve the thing correctly. Giveaway: "to treat X as Y is to mistake," "the question is not whether," "what is at issue is not."
Mechanism
Why naming the relationship before reading the choices is the whole method
Distractors on this item type are not written from scratch. They are written by taking the credited relationship and bending exactly one dimension of it: the target (the response is correct but aimed at a claim Text 1 never made), the strength (correct direction, overshot certainty — "refutes" where the author wrote "does not establish"), the direction (Text 1 responding to Text 2 rather than the reverse), or the source (a fact borrowed from the other text, or from the world, rather than from the responding author). That construction is why prediction works here even better than it does on Words in Context. If you walk into the choices with a fixed relationship — "Text 2 grants the observation and denies the cause, aimed at Reyes's innateness conclusion, at the strength of does-not-establish" — then each wrong choice announces which dimension it bent, and you are running four cheap one-dimensional checks instead of four open-ended judgements. Walk in without a prediction and you are doing the opposite: reconstructing the relationship four separate times from four fluent, confident paraphrases, each written to be persuasive on its own. That is not a reading task any more; it is four consecutive opportunities to be talked out of a correct reading you had not yet committed to.
The method, five steps
Step 1 — read Text 1 and state its claim in one sentence, with a verb of position. Do this before your eyes touch Text 2. Sub-vocalising "Text 1 concludes that the dam removal caused the fish recovery" takes about three seconds and is the difference between carrying an argument forward and carrying an impression forward.
Step 2 — read Text 2 and state its claim in one sentence the same way. Resist the pull to state it as a reaction ("Text 2 disagrees"). State it as a position of its own ("Text 2 concludes the recovery could be explained by six unusually wet years, which the study never ruled out"). Reactions are vague; positions are checkable.
Step 3 — name the relationship from the six shapes, and note its strength. Not "they disagree" but "alternative explanation, at does-not-establish strength." The strength is half the answer on hard items and students routinely drop it.
Step 4 — now read the stem, twice. Who is responding to whom, and to which claim? Some stems reverse the usual direction and ask how Text 1's author would respond to Text 2. Some narrow the target from the text's conclusion to a single quoted phrase inside it. Some ask what both would agree about, which is a different question with a different answer profile. A perfect account of the relationship, applied to the wrong stem, is a wrong answer.
Step 5 — screen the four choices on two constraints, in this order. First: can I point at the clause in the responding text that licenses this? If not, eliminate, however sensible the choice is. Second: is this aimed at the target the stem named, at the strength the author actually used? What survives both is the answer, and it will usually be the choice that sounded slightly less dramatic than the one you were drawn to.
Worked examples
Fully worked — how would the author of Text 2 respond
- 01The pair. Text 1: a restoration ecologist reports that a river's trout population tripled in the six years after a dam was removed, and concludes that dam removal restores fish populations. Text 2: those same six years were the wettest on record in the watershed, high flows on their own raise juvenile survival, and no comparable undammed river was monitored over the period. Stem: how would the author of Text 2 most likely respond to the conclusion in Text 1?
- 02Step 1 — Text 1's claim, one sentence, verb of position: Text 1 concludes that removing the dam caused the trout recovery.
- 03Step 2 — Text 2's claim, stated as a position rather than a reaction: Text 2 holds that an unusually wet six years could produce the same recovery, and that with no comparison river the study cannot separate the two causes.
- 04Step 3 — name the relationship and its strength: alternative explanation, at insufficient-evidence strength. Text 2 does not report that trout failed to recover, and does not claim dam removal is useless; it says a rival cause ran at the same time and was never ruled out.
- 05Step 4 — read the stem twice: it asks how Text 2's author responds to Text 1's conclusion. Not to the trout count, which Text 2 never contests, and not the reverse direction.
- 06Step 5a — predict in your own words before looking: the recovery is real, but it cannot be attributed to the dam removal while an untested rival cause moved alongside it.
- 07Step 5b — screen the choices. "The trout population did not actually triple" fails constraint one — Text 2 never disputes the count. "Dam removal is not worth its cost" fails constraint one by overreach — cost appears nowhere in Text 2. "Rainfall records for the region are unreliable" fails constraint one — invented; Text 2 relies on those records. What survives is the choice that grants the recovery and challenges the causal inference for want of a comparison case.
One step hidden — a both-authors-agree stem
- 01The pair. Text 1: a historian argues that the printing press drove the rapid spread of the Reformation, citing the volume of pamphlets printed between 1517 and 1525. Text 2: argues that pamphlet volume followed the movement rather than causing it, since most presses turning out those pamphlets were established in towns where preaching had already drawn crowds. Stem: both authors would most likely agree with which statement?
- 02Steps 1 and 2 — the two claims: Text 1 concludes the press caused the spread; Text 2 concludes the press followed the spread, and preaching drove it.
- 03Step 3 — name the relationship: direct disagreement about the direction of causation, over a body of facts both authors accept.
- 04Step 4 — the stem is a both-agree stem, so shift what you are hunting for: not the relationship between the conclusions but the premise underneath both. Both authors take as given that pamphlet output rose sharply in these years and that the Reformation spread quickly; neither argument runs without those.
- 05Step 5 — predict: the credited statement will assert the shared factual ground — large numbers of Reformation pamphlets were printed in this period — and will not assert either author's causal conclusion.
Two steps hidden — a reversed stem
- 01The pair. Text 1: a linguist argues that a newly described language's unusual verb-final word order is inherited from a much older ancestor, noting that two neighbouring but unrelated languages share it. Text 2: argues the shared order is contact-induced, since all three languages have been spoken in one valley for centuries and the order is absent from the earliest documented stage of each. Stem: how would the author of Text 1 most likely respond to Text 2?
- 02Step 4 first, because the stem is reversed: Text 1's author is doing the responding, so the answer must be licensed by Text 1 and by nothing else. A choice that is a superb response but requires a fact only Text 2 supplies is out.
- 03Inventory what Text 1 actually gives its author to work with: one piece of support — the shared order across neighbouring languages — and nothing at all about the earliest documented stages.
Solve alone
- 01The pair. Text 1: a nutrition researcher reports that adults who ate breakfast daily weighed less over a ten-year follow-up than adults who skipped it, and concludes that eating breakfast helps control weight. Text 2: in the randomised trials on the question, assigning adults to eat or skip breakfast produced no weight difference over a year; people who eat breakfast daily also smoke less, exercise more, and keep more regular sleep. Stem: how would the author of Text 2 most likely respond to the conclusion in Text 1? Work steps 1 through 5 yourself before revealing anything below.

Named traps
- Assumed disagreement
- Treating every pair as a fight, so the most adversarial choice wins by default. A substantial share of pairs are complementary — Text 2 supplies a mechanism, a case, or a boundary for what Text 1 observed — and on those the confrontational choices are the trap. Name the relationship honestly, including "supports," before the choices get a vote.
- Binary collapse
- Flattening a qualified response into a total one: Text 2 writes "does not establish," "cannot discriminate," "remains one candidate," and the chosen answer says "refutes," "disproves," "shows to be false." Not established and false are different claims. On the hardest pairs, two choices point the same direction and differ only in strength, and the weaker one wins whenever the author hedged.
- Right relationship, wrong target
- Text 2 genuinely does disagree, and the choice describes that disagreement accurately — but attaches it to a claim Text 1 never made, or to a subsidiary detail rather than the claim the stem named. This is why step 4 is re-reading the stem after predicting, not before: the prediction is what makes a mis-targeted choice visible.
- Attribution swap
- Putting one text's evidence in the other author's mouth. Text 2's author has not read Text 1 and cannot cite its data; a response that depends on a fact appearing only in Text 1 is disqualified on that ground alone, however well it fits the argument.
- Outside-knowledge import
- The choice is a reasonable, sometimes even correct, thing a specialist in the field would say — and nothing in the responding text licenses it. This trap gets stronger the more you know about the subject, which is why it catches high scorers specifically. Domain knowledge on this item type is a liability unless it is disciplined by the point-at-the-clause test.
- Silence read as position
- Text 2 never mentions X, so the choice has Text 2's author denying X — or endorsing it. Not addressing a claim is not taking a position on it. This distinction decides most "both authors would most likely agree" items, where the tempting wrong answer is something one author asserts and the other simply never raises.
The 800-level margin
At 1500 you are not losing these questions to comprehension. You read both texts correctly and then lost the point in the last ten seconds, on which question was being asked or on how strong a claim the choice was making. What follows is that margin, itemised.
Read the stem twice, and read it for direction as well as content. Most stems ask how Text 2's author responds to Text 1; some reverse it, and the test always writes a fluent distractor for the direction you assumed. Others narrow the target from the text's conclusion to one quoted or underlined phrase inside it — and a choice can be a flawless account of Text 2's response to Text 1's whole argument and still be wrong because the stem asked about a single sentence in it.
Match the modality, not just the direction. Authors on this test hedge deliberately: "may," "suggests," "one candidate among several," "cannot yet be ruled out," "the evidence supports a narrower claim." A choice reading "proves," "demonstrates," or "refutes" overshoots even when its direction is right. When two surviving choices point the same way, the discriminator is almost always strength, and the credited answer is almost always the more restrained of the two.
Text 1 frequently reports someone else's position rather than asserting its own — "the conventional explanation is," "critics have often read," "Reyes concluded." The stem then asks about that reported position, not about Text 1's author, who may be neutral or even sceptical of it. Confusing the reporter with the position reported is a pure 800-level error: it costs nothing at 1200, because at 1200 the other slips dominate, and it is worth real points once they are gone.
On both-authors-agree items, verify the candidate twice — once against Text 1, once against Text 2, deliberately and in that order. The standard failure is verifying it against whichever text you read most recently and assuming the other, which is exactly how a Text-2-only claim gets credited as shared. And remember the profile: the answer is usually the shared premise both arguments stand on, not either author's conclusion.
Under-selected shape: the complementary pair. When Text 2 explains why Text 1's observation would be expected — supplying the mechanism, the boundary condition, or an independent case — the credited answer is "supports" or "extends," and every adversarial choice is a trap. Students who have drilled this item type are more vulnerable here than students who have not, because drilling teaches you to expect a rebuttal.
The clock. This is the longest single item in the Reading & Writing module: two passages plus four unusually long choices. College Board states that Reading and Writing questions are grouped by domain and, within a domain, run roughly easiest to hardest; in released Bluebook forms the Craft & Structure block sits early in each module, with the cross-text item at the end of that block. Treat the exact position as a Bluebook observation rather than a guarantee. What is not in doubt is that the two one-sentence claim summaries feel like a detour and are the thing that makes the choice screening fast — the time they cost is repaid at step 5 with interest.
Three execution errors, named so you can check for them under time. First: building a correct account of Text 2's position and then selecting the choice that best describes Text 1 — the most common single slip on this item type, and invisible unless you re-read the stem. Second: picking the choice that is the best summary of Text 2 rather than the best answer to the stem; an accurate paraphrase of Text 2 that responds to nothing in Text 1 is a distractor, and a good one. Third: abandoning a correct prediction because a choice is beautifully written. Fluency in a distractor is engineered, not accidental; if a choice contradicts the relationship you named, the burden is on the choice, not on your prediction.
Retrieval — with feedback on every choice
Text 1: In a widely cited study, the biologist Ana Reyes recorded New Caledonian crows bending lengths of wire into hooks to extract food from narrow tubes. Because none of the birds had ever watched another crow perform the behaviour, Reyes concluded that hook-making in this species is innate: the birds arrive with the design already specified, and experience merely supplies the occasion to express it. Text 2: Reyes's birds were not naive. All had spent months in enclosures furnished with pliable twigs, and juvenile crows in such settings handle flexible material constantly. A bird that has spent a season discovering what a twig does when it is bent has been trained — not by another crow, but by the material. What Reyes documented may well be a genuine capacity, but the absence of a demonstrator does not establish the absence of learning.

CROSS-TEXT CONNECTIONS — reference card One sentence for Text 1's claim. One sentence for Text 2's claim. Verb of position in both. Then name the relationship, with its strength, BEFORE reading any choice. Six shapes: contradicts / alternative explanation / narrows the scope / says the evidence is insufficient / supports and extends / reframes the question. Alternative explanation is the most common on hard pairs. Contradiction is the rarest. The credited answer must be underwritten by the responding text alone. Plausible is not the standard; stated is. Point at the clause. If you cannot, eliminate — however sensible the choice sounds. Re-read the stem after predicting: whose response, to which claim, in which direction. Match the hedge. "May / suggests / does not establish" never licenses "proves / refutes / disproves." Both-agree items: the answer is the shared premise, not either conclusion. Verify against each text separately. Silence is not a position. A text that never mentions X neither endorses nor denies X. Text 1 often reports someone else's view. Answer about the view the stem names, not about Text 1's author. Longest item in the module. Budget the time; the two claim sentences are what pay it back.

This reads the pushback as an attack on the data, but Text 2 concedes the finding outright — "What Reyes documented may well be a genuine capacity." The twig-filled enclosure is introduced as a source of prior learning, not as a reason to doubt that hooks were made.
- By granting that no crow learned the behaviour by watching another crow, while denying that this rules out learning of a different kind.
Correct, and it matches Text 2's final sentence almost clause for clause: the absence of a demonstrator does not establish the absence of learning. Text 2 accepts Reyes's observation (no demonstrator, hooks made) and refuses the inference (therefore innate), on the grounds that months of handling pliable twigs is itself a training history. Alternative explanation at does-not-establish strength — note that Text 2 never claims hook-making is learned, only that innateness is not shown.
- CBy agreeing that hook-making is innate, while adding that the trait emerges only in birds housed with pliable material.
"May well be a genuine capacity" is a concession about the behaviour, not agreement that it is innate — and the rest of the paragraph exists to argue that innateness has not been shown. The second half of this choice is also self-undermining: a trait that emerges only given a particular history of handling material is the learning account, not the innateness account.
- DBy objecting that Reyes should have tested a second corvid species before drawing conclusions about hook-making in birds.
A reasonable-sounding methodological complaint that Text 2 never makes; its objection is about an unexamined source of learning within the study, not about generalising across species. Reyes's conclusion as reported is already scoped to New Caledonian crows, so the complaint does not even land on the claim in question.
Traps tested: Manufactured dispute · Concession misread as agreement · Imported critique
Text 1: The economist Marcus Delaney's analysis of 240 municipal transit expansions found that ridership rose an average of 18 percent in the three years after a new rail line opened. Delaney argues that a pattern this consistent supports a general rule: cities seeking to raise transit use should build rail. Text 2: Delaney's average conceals its own explanation. Of the 240 expansions, 61 occurred in cities that simultaneously raised downtown parking prices, and those 61 account for nearly all of the aggregate gain; across the remaining cities, ridership was essentially flat. Rail may still be worth building, but the evidence assembled here supports a considerably narrower claim than the one Delaney draws from it.
Based on the texts, how would the author of Text 2 most likely characterise Delaney's "general rule"?
- AAs disproved: in the 179 cities that did not raise parking prices, ridership was flat, which shows that new rail lines do not increase ridership.
Text 2 writes "Rail may still be worth building" — an explicit refusal to draw this verdict. A flat result in one subset shows that rail alone did not raise ridership in those cities; converting that into a general claim that rail does not increase ridership is exactly the overshoot Text 2 declines to make. Right direction, wrong strength.
- BAs premature, since a three-year window is too short to reveal lasting changes in commuting habits.
Text 2 never raises the length of the follow-up window; its entire objection is about which cities the gain came from. This is a plausible criticism of a study of this kind, written by someone other than Text 2's author, and choosing it means answering from what such an objection usually says rather than from what this one does.
- CAs correct in principle but impractical, since few cities can afford the political cost of raising parking prices.
Nothing about affordability, political cost, or feasibility appears anywhere in Text 2, which is an argument about what the data support, not about what cities can manage. It is also the wrong shape: Text 2 questions whether the rule is established, not whether it can be implemented.
- As broader than his own data support, since nearly all of the average gain he reports comes from the minority of cities that also made driving more expensive.
Correct, and it is Text 2's closing sentence restated: the evidence supports a considerably narrower claim than the one Delaney draws from it. Scope limitation, not refutation — Text 2 accepts the 18 percent average as computed and shows that it is carried by 61 of 240 cases in which a second intervention ran alongside the rail line, so the rule as stated reaches cases the data never tested.
Traps tested: Binary collapse · Imported critique · Outside knowledge import
Text 1: Critics have long read Charlotte Mew's late poems as records of private grief, taking the recurring image of the shuttered house as a figure for the poet's own withdrawal. On this account the poems' formal severity — the clipped lines, the endings that refuse to resolve — is symptomatic: the form registers a mind under pressure. Text 2: To treat Mew's shuttered house as autobiography is to mistake a device for a confession. The image appears first in poems written years before the losses it is said to encode, and it is given to speakers Mew takes evident pains to distinguish from herself. The clipped lines are worked, not involuntary; the manuscripts show the severity arriving late, in revision.
Based on the texts, both authors would most likely agree with which statement about Mew's late poems?
- AThe shuttered house is best understood as a figure for Mew's withdrawal from public life.
That is the reading Text 1 reports and Text 2 exists to dismantle — "to mistake a device for a confession." On a both-agree stem, the claim the second text is arguing against is the one thing that cannot be shared, and it is the choice most students reach for because it is the pair's most memorable sentence.
- BThe poems are best read alongside Mew's letters rather than in isolation.
Letters are mentioned in neither text. This is written to sound like the balanced position between a biographical critic and a formalist one, which is precisely what makes it attractive; but a compromise neither author states belongs to a third writer who is not on the page.
- The formal severity of the late poems is a real feature of the work that calls for explanation.
Correct.
