Every other question in this section hands you a text and asks what is true of it; this one hands you a task and asks which sentence performs it. Nearly every wrong choice here is accurate — lifted straight from the notes, checkable against them word for word — so accuracy cannot be what separates the four. What separates them is the goal sentence, and this question type is lost by students who read the notes carefully and the goal fast.

Foundations — skip this block if it is already obvious

If you already read the goal before the bullets and treat it as a list of requirements, skip to "The goal sentence is the whole question" — nothing later in this lesson depends on this block. It is here because this item looks like a reading question and is not one, and a reader who approaches it as reading comprehension will lose points while understanding every bullet perfectly.

What the question looks like on screen: a line reading "While researching a topic, a student has taken the following notes," then four to eight bullet fragments. Under them, one sentence naming a goal — "The student wants to emphasize a similarity between the two methods" — and then the stem, which is the same on every item of this type: "Which choice most effectively uses relevant information from the notes to accomplish this goal?" Four choices follow, each one a sentence or two assembled out of the bullets.

The bullets are not a passage. There is no main idea to find, no inference to draw, nothing to remember thirty seconds later. They are a parts bin, deliberately unstructured: fragments, in an order that does not matter, several of which exist only so that distractors can be built out of them. You do not need to understand the topic. You need to locate the two or three parts the goal calls for. Once that clicks, this becomes the fastest question type in the section, and the time it banks is what pays for the hardest inference items later in the module.

What a GOAL is, precisely: an act you want a sentence to perform on a reader, not a fact you want it to contain. Emphasize a similarity. Introduce the technique to an audience already familiar with something else. Explain why the result was surprising. Present the study's methodology. Each of those names a job. A sentence that carries the right facts and does a different job is wrong — and it will feel right, because you can point at a bullet and confirm every word of it.

One grammar fact this question type quietly depends on, stated plainly for anyone who was never taught it. A sentence makes exactly one assertion: its MAIN CLAUSE. Everything else is attached to that assertion as background — relative clauses ("which cut construction time in half"), subordinate clauses ("although the sample was small"), appositives ("aluminous tobermorite, an interlocking mineral"), participial phrases ("applied in the sixteenth century"). Both kinds of material sit in the sentence. Only one of them is what the sentence says. Whichever half your eye happens to land on, the sentence emphasizes the main clause.

And one definition, because the test uses it precisely and ordinary speech does not. Two facts placed next to each other are a LIST. A COMPARISON states a relationship between them — more, less, unlike, whereas, both, neither, the same. The working check: if you could delete either fact and the sentence would still be true and complete, nothing is being compared. "Method A is fast. Method B is cheap." is two sentences pretending to be a comparison, and joining them with a comma does not change that.

The goal sentence is the whole question

Every goal decomposes into the same parts: a VERB (the act to perform), one or more OBJECTS (which notes therefore have to appear), and often an AUDIENCE CLAUSE or a CONCESSION. Pull them apart explicitly — literally write them down for the first fifty of these you do — because a goal carrying two requirements is the standard way this question gets hard, and the requirement that gets dropped is always the second one.

The verbs, and what each one demands. EMPHASIZE X — X must be what the main clause asserts, not something the sentence passes on the way somewhere else. COMPARE or CONTRAST A and B — both must appear and the relationship must be stated. INTRODUCE X — X must be identified rather than assumed, with the audience clause fixing what may be taken as known. EXPLAIN WHY — a cause or mechanism, not a restatement of the thing being explained. ILLUSTRATE or GIVE AN EXAMPLE — a specific instance, never a general claim. SPECIFY or DEFINE — the criterion that decides membership, not an example of something that meets it. MAKE A GENERALIZATION — a claim covering the cases in the notes and no wider.

Three verbs that look like one and are not: PRESENT THE METHODOLOGY (what was done, to whom, in what order), PRESENT THE FINDINGS (what came out of it), and STATE THE CONCLUSION (what the researchers took it to mean). The test asks all three, and it builds every item of this family so that the other two are sitting there as choices. Losing one of these is almost never a reading failure; it is answering a neighbouring question.

The audience clause is a requirement, not scene-setting. "To an audience unfamiliar with X" means X has to be explained inside the sentence itself, in ordinary words. "To an audience already familiar with X" means the reverse: X may be assumed, and the credited sentence normally uses it as the anchor that the new thing is defined against. Explaining what the stated audience already knows is a wrong answer even when every word of it is true, which is why that choice is written into so many of these items.

The other half of the stem is also a requirement, and it is the one strong students skip: "most effectively uses relevant information FROM THE NOTES." A sentence that performs the goal flawlessly using a fact that is not in the notes is wrong. This is a favourite construction on the hardest items precisely because such a choice matches the goal better than the credited answer does on a first read — it was written by someone who knew the topic, which is exactly what the question forbids.

How much of the section this is worth, stated honestly. College Board publishes the domain figure: Expression of Ideas is about 20% of Reading & Writing, roughly eleven questions across the two modules, shared between Rhetorical Synthesis and Transitions. It does not publish the split between the two. Any per-skill count you meet — including any you see from us — is a prep-industry estimate reverse-engineered from released forms. Treat it as a handful of questions per test, not as a published quantity.

The method — decompose the goal before you read a single bullet

Step 1 — read the goal first. Cover the notes with your hand if you have to. The bullets are unsorted, and a pass through them without knowing what you are hunting for is a pass you will simply have to repeat once you find out.

Step 2 — decompose the goal into a numbered requirement list: verb, objects, audience, concession. Two requirements is normal. Three happens. Counting them takes four seconds and is the highest-yield four seconds available on this question type, because the count is what stops you from accepting a choice that satisfied requirement one beautifully.

Step 3 — go into the notes hunting only for what the list needs. You do not have to read every bullet, and you certainly do not have to understand the subject. Bullets that satisfy nothing on your list are there to be built into distractors; recognising one as irrelevant is a completed step, not a step skipped.

Step 4 — predict the sentence in your own words before any choice is visible. Rough is fine: "both need a reference sample of known age" is a perfectly good prediction even when the credited answer is a thirty-word sentence. The prediction is what turns the traps into traps instead of into options.

Step 5 — screen, do not select. Walk all four choices trying to kill each one on a specific failed requirement, and say which requirement failed. "Doesn't compare — only the second method appears" is a kill. "Doesn't explain why, just restates the result" is a kill. "This one reads better" is not a kill, and on a well-built item the choice that reads best is frequently the one that did the least.

Step 6 — run the emphasis check on whatever survives. Ask what the main clause asserts. If the goal said EMPHASIZE and the required element is sitting inside a modifier, that choice is not the answer, however accurate it is and however prominently the fact appears. This one check recovers more points on this question type than any other single habit.

Mechanism

Why emphasis is a fact about grammar, not about tone

A sentence asserts what its main clause says. Everything packaged as a modifier — a relative clause, an appositive, a participial phrase, a subordinate clause — is handed to the reader as already settled, something to accept in passing on the way to the point. There is a three-second test that makes this visible: negate the sentence and see what survives. Take "The modular design, which cut construction time in half, was chosen mainly for its seismic performance." Negate it — "was NOT chosen mainly for its seismic performance" — and the halved construction time is still standing there, completely untouched, because it was never what the sentence claimed in the first place. Whatever survives negation is background, and background cannot be emphasis. This is the mechanism that lets the test build a distractor containing every single word the goal named and still have it be, unambiguously, the wrong answer: the fact is in the sentence, and the sentence is about something else. It is also why "but I checked, and that fact IS in the choice" is not a defence. Checking that a fact is present verifies the wrong property.

Worked examples

Fully worked — emphasize a difference

  1. 01Notes: • Europa (a moon of Jupiter) and Enceladus (a moon of Saturn) are both thought to hold liquid-water oceans beneath ice shells. • Estimates of Europa's ice shell run from roughly ten to thirty kilometres thick. • Enceladus vents plumes of water vapour and ice grains through fractures near its south pole. • A spacecraft has flown directly through those plumes and sampled the material. • No comparable plume activity has been confirmed at Europa. • Sampling Europa's ocean would require landing and drilling, or catching ocean material that reaches the surface some other way. GOAL: the student wants to emphasize a difference between the two moons that matters for how their oceans can be studied.
  2. 02Decompose the goal before touching the bullets. Verb: emphasize a difference — so both moons must appear AND the relationship must be stated as a contrast, not as two facts side by side. Object, and this is the second requirement: the difference has to be one that bears on HOW THE OCEANS CAN BE STUDIED. Count: two requirements.
  3. 03Hunt the notes against that list. Requirement two immediately kills most of the parts bin: the shell-thickness bullet is a real difference on the wrong dimension, and the shared-ocean bullet is a similarity. What survives are the three access bullets — plumes at Enceladus, sampled directly by spacecraft; no confirmed plumes at Europa; Europa would need landing and drilling.
  4. 04Predict in your own words: "Enceladus throws its ocean into space where a spacecraft can fly through it; Europa's would have to be reached by landing and drilling." Rough, and it already satisfies both requirements.
  5. 05Screen against the requirement list. Reject "Europa's ice shell is estimated at ten to thirty kilometres, while Enceladus's is far thinner" — a genuine contrast, on a dimension the goal did not ask about, and requirement two is what kills it. Reject "Both Europa and Enceladus are thought to hold liquid-water oceans beneath their ice" — right pair, wrong relation; the goal said difference. Reject "Spacecraft have flown directly through the plumes Enceladus vents from fractures near its south pole" — true, and only one moon appears, so nothing is being compared. What survives is the prediction: Enceladus delivers samples to orbit while Europa's ocean would have to be drilled for — both moons, an explicit contrast, and the access dimension the goal named.

One step hidden — introduce, with an audience clause

  1. 01Notes: • The Antikythera mechanism was recovered from a first-century-BCE shipwreck off a Greek island. • X-ray tomography has revealed at least thirty interlocking bronze gears inside the corroded fragments. • The gear trains model the motions of the sun and moon and predict eclipses. • A pin-and-slot arrangement reproduces the moon's varying apparent speed across the sky. • Geared instruments of comparable complexity do not reappear in the surviving European record until the fourteenth century. GOAL: the student wants to introduce the mechanism to an audience already familiar with mechanical clocks.
  2. 02Decompose. Verb: introduce — the mechanism has to be identified, not assumed. Audience clause: already familiar with mechanical clocks — so gears and gear trains may be taken as known, and the clock is the anchor the new object should be defined against. Two requirements again.
  3. 03Hunt: the bullets that pay are the gear count, what the gear train is FOR (sun, moon, eclipses, rather than hours), and the fourteen-century gap. The shipwreck and the tomography are provenance — accurate, and they identify how the object was found rather than what it is.
  4. 04Predict, using the anchor rather than explaining it: "a bronze gear train from the first century BCE that runs like clockwork but tracks the sun, moon, and eclipses instead of the hours — and nothing comparable survives in Europe for another fourteen centuries."

Two steps hidden — specify, for an unfamiliar audience

  1. 01Notes: • Ecologists use the term "ecosystem engineer" for a species that physically modifies the habitat other species live in. • Beavers dam streams, converting running water into ponds and wetlands used by many other species. • Coral polyps build the reef structure that reef organisms inhabit. • A predator that controls prey numbers changes a community without altering its physical structure, and does not qualify. • The category is defined by the physical change, not by the size of the species' effect on other organisms. GOAL: the student wants to specify what makes a species an ecosystem engineer, for an audience unfamiliar with the term.
  2. 02Decompose. Verb: specify — a criterion that decides membership, not an instance of something that meets it. Audience clause: unfamiliar with the term — so the term itself has to be given and explained in ordinary words rather than assumed. The last two bullets are doing the real work: one supplies the boundary of the category, the other supplies a case that falls outside it.

Solve alone

  1. 01Notes: • A long-running programme has monitored the same set of alpine plant plots since 1978. • Mean summer temperature at the plots has risen by about 1.6 degrees Celsius over that period. • The number of plant species recorded per plot has increased. • Nearly all of the new arrivals are species previously found only at lower elevations. • Three species originally recorded only on the highest plots have not been found in the last two surveys. • The monitoring records presence and absence, not population size. Named traps

True but off-goal
The choice is accurate against the notes and performs a different act — it describes where the goal said explain, states a similarity where the goal said difference, gives the findings where the goal said methodology. This is the default wrong answer on this question type and it accounts for more losses than the other five combined. The reason it works: accuracy is checkable against a bullet, and checking produces the physical sensation of being right. The fix is to name the act the choice performs before deciding whether it is the act you were asked for.
Buried emphasis
The required element is in the sentence, and it is in a relative clause, an appositive, or a subordinate clause, so the sentence asserts something else. Run the negation test: negate the main clause and see whether the required fact survives untouched. If it does, it was background, and background is not emphasis. This is the trap that catches students who have learned to check that the right material is present — because presence is exactly what it satisfies.
Half-comparison
On a compare or contrast goal: only one of the two things appears, or both appear with no relationship stated between them. Two facts joined by a comma or an "and" are a list. The variant that survives furthest up the score range is the WRONG-DIMENSION comparison — both things present, an explicit relationship stated, on a property the goal did not name. A goal asking you to compare two fibres in terms of performance is not satisfied by a flawless contrast of how they are manufactured.
Plausible outsider
A sentence that performs the goal cleanly using a fact that is not in the notes. It is often the best-written choice on the item, because it was constructed by someone who knew the subject, and it frequently matches the goal verb better than the credited answer does. The stem's second clause — "uses relevant information from the notes" — is the requirement it fails. Before accepting any choice, put a finger on the bullet behind each of its claims; the one you cannot find is the answer to the question of why it is there.
Attribution collapse
A note that reads "suggesting that," "may indicate," "has been proposed," or "some historians argue" turns up in a choice as a flat assertion. The hedge is information, and deleting it changes the claim into a stronger one the notes do not license. The mirror error is equally wrong and much rarer: a note that states something outright, softened by a choice into a "may." Both are settled by rereading one bullet.
Conceded-half emphasis
The goal itself grants something — "despite being the weaker fibre," "although the sample was small," "even though the technique is slower" — and the choice makes that granted material its main clause. The result is accurate about both facts and has the emphasis exactly backwards. Whenever a goal contains "despite," "although," or "even though," the conceded material must appear in the credited sentence and must sit in a subordinate position, and this trap is the most-chosen wrong answer on those items.

The 800-level margin

If you are dropping one Rhetorical Synthesis question per module, it is almost never because a bullet was hard to understand. It is because two choices both performed the goal and you picked on feel, or because the goal carried a second requirement and you answered the first one and stopped. This block is only about that margin — and about the fact that this question type should be finishing well under a minute, because the time it banks is what buys you the two hardest items in the module.

Verify every requirement in a compound goal separately. "The student wants to compare the two methods and identify the advantage of the newer one" is two requirements, and a choice that nails the comparison while never naming an advantage is wrong. The standard failure is mechanical: confirm the first requirement, feel the click of recognition, stop reading. Count the requirements before you look at a choice, and hold the count — the number itself is what makes the second one impossible to drop.

Read the concession in a goal as an instruction about structure. "Emphasize that the method remains accurate despite its low resolution" is telling you where two pieces of material must go: the accuracy in the main clause, the resolution subordinate to it. A choice that reverses them is accurate about both facts and fails the goal completely. This is worth its own reflex, because the reversed version is written to be the most natural-sounding sentence on the item.

Watch the hedges, in both directions. A bullet reading "suggesting that the recognition spread socially" does not license a choice reading "proved that the recognition spread socially," and a bullet reading "has not been recorded in the last two surveys" does not license "is extinct." These items are graded on the exact strength of the claim, the evidence is four lines away, and almost nobody rereads the bullet. Make the reread automatic on any choice containing a strong verb.

Superlatives and universals are checkable in five seconds and are almost never checked. "The first," "the only," "the largest," "all," "always," "no other," "unlike any." Find the bullet that licenses the word or eliminate the choice. Notes routinely say "the earliest known" and a distractor will say "the first" — those are different claims, and on the hardest items that one word is the entire discrimination.

When two choices both perform the act, the tiebreak is almost always specificity against the notes rather than quality of writing. The credited answer names the particular bullets the goal pointed at; the survivor that loses tends to perform the act in general terms that would fit any set of notes on the topic. Ask of each: could this sentence have been written by someone who read the goal and the topic heading but not the bullets? If yes, it is the loser, however well it reads.

The execution errors, in order of what they cost. Reading the bullets before the goal, which forces a second pass on every single item. Answering the goal you expected instead of the goal that is printed, which happens most on the goal type you have seen forty times. Accepting a survivor because the other three died, without ever confirming positively that it performs the act. And the cheapest of all to fix: not reading a two-sentence choice to its final word — a compound choice fails if either half fails, and the second half is where these are built to fail.

"Uses relevant information from the notes" is a requirement: a perfect sentence built on an outside fact is wrong.
Keep the notes' hedges. "Suggests" must not become "proves"; "some argue" must not become an assertion.
Whatever the goal concedes (despite / although / even though) must appear AND must be subordinate.
Two survivors? Pick the one that names the specific bullets, not the one that reads well in general.

    A student picking this has correctly noticed that both methods appear and that a relationship is stated — two of the three things a comparison needs. The relationship is the wrong one. "While" sets the two definitions against each other, so the sentence delivers a contrast to a goal that asked for a similarity.

  • BRadiocarbon dating, which like dendrochronology depends on a reference record of known-age samples, returns a range of decades rather than a single year.

    The similarity is genuinely in this sentence — and it is inside a relative clause. Negate the main clause: "does NOT return a range of decades." The shared dependence on a reference record survives that negation untouched, which shows it was never what the sentence claimed. What this sentence asserts is a limitation of one method.

  • CAlthough dendrochronology can place a sample in an exact year, it can do so only in regions where a master sequence has already been built.

    Accurate, and only one method is in the sentence. Nothing can be similar to anything here, because there is only one thing. The reason this gets picked is that its "although" reads like a relational structure — but the two halves relate a method to its own limitation, not one method to the other.

  • Despite relying on entirely different physical processes, dendrochronology and radiocarbon dating both depend on a reference record built from samples whose ages were already known.

    Correct. Check it against the requirements: both methods appear; the relationship is stated explicitly ("both depend on"); and the shared property is the main clause's assertion, with the difference subordinated into the opening concession — which is where a difference belongs when the goal asked for a similarity.

Question 2Hard

NOTES. While researching a topic, a student has taken the following notes: • Conventional ultrasound imaging sends pulses of sound into tissue and records the echoes that return from structures inside the body. • Photoacoustic imaging has been developed over roughly the past two decades. • It illuminates tissue with a very short pulse of laser light. • The tissue absorbs the light, warms by a fraction of a degree, and expands. • That sudden expansion generates an ultrasound wave, picked up by the same kind of detector conventional ultrasound uses. • Photoacoustic images show which molecules are present — oxygenated versus deoxygenated haemoglobin, for instance — where ultrasound shows structure.

The student wants to introduce photoacoustic imaging to an audience already familiar with conventional ultrasound. Which choice most effectively uses relevant information from the notes to accomplish this goal?

  • Where conventional ultrasound sends sound into tissue and listens for the echo, photoacoustic imaging sends in light and listens for the sound the tissue itself gives off.

    Correct. It treats ultrasound as known rather than explaining it, uses it as the reference point, and states the defining reversal in one move — light in, sound out. Every element traces to a bullet: the laser pulse, the expansion that generates an ultrasound wave, and the fact that the same class of detector reads it.

  • BConventional ultrasound imaging works by sending pulses of sound into tissue and recording the echoes that return from the structures inside the body.

    Every word is accurate and the sentence spends itself entirely on what the goal explicitly said the audience already has. Worse, the thing being introduced never appears. This choice is on nearly every "already familiar with X" item, because background feels like the responsible way to open — and the audience clause is precisely the instruction not to write it.

  • CPhotoacoustic imaging, developed over roughly the past two decades, illuminates tissue with a very short laser pulse; the tissue absorbs the light, warms slightly, and expands.

    This does introduce the technique, and it is the strongest wrong answer here — the discrimination is "most effectively," not "at all." Two things sink it. It uses none of the information the goal told you the reader already has, so it would read identically to an audience with no background whatever; and it stops halfway through the mechanism, before the expansion produces the sound wave that the reader's own detectors pick up. It ends on tissue warming, which explains nothing to anyone.

  • DBecause it requires no injected contrast agents, photoacoustic imaging can distinguish oxygenated from deoxygenated haemoglobin without any added dye.

    The haemoglobin half is in the notes; contrast agents and dye are not, anywhere. This is the plausible outsider — a true statement about the technique, supplied by knowledge of the subject rather than by the bullets, which the stem's "uses relevant information from the notes" rules out. It also assumes the reader already knows what the technique is, so it never introduces anything.

NOTES. While researching a topic, a student has taken the following notes: • Roman marine concrete in harbour structures has survived two thousand years of direct seawater exposure. • Modern Portland-cement concrete exposed to seawater typically begins to degrade within decades. • Roman builders mixed volcanic ash and lime with seawater. • Samples drilled from Roman harbour structures contain aluminous tobermorite, an interlocking mineral that reinforces the material around it. • The mineral was not present in the original mix; it grew over time as seawater percolated through the concrete. • In modern reinforced concrete, seawater penetration cracks the matrix and corrodes the steel inside it.
